       The Lake County Sheriff's Office
                        Canine Unit


        In 2006 the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a grant for the purchase of a drug detecting dog. The grant was funded by the Ray of Hope Foundation which was created to honor Mr. Ray Timbrook.  Through this grant the Sheriff's Office purchased a one year old German Shepherd from the Cezch-Republic.

           The Sheriff's canine is named Saber.  SABER stands for Scott Authority Brian Excellence Ray. (named after Ray Timbrook and his two sons Scott and Brian).   

         Under the supervision of his handler Deputy Alan Moon, Saber's role is to provide support to the various divisions of the Lake County Sheriff's Office, and when requested aid and support other law enforcement agencies throughout Lake County.  Saber is trained in narcotic detection, building searches, article / evidence search, tracking, area searches, and aggression control.   Additionally he aids in searching the Sheriff's Office Correctional facilities for contraband.

Canines used in a variety of situations:

►   To search for hidden suspects
►   To search all types of buildings for criminals in hiding
►   To apprehend fleeing suspect
►   To search for lost persons
►   To search for evidence or property connected with a crime
►   To search for illegal drugs that have been hidden
►   To protect the handler, other officers and citizens
►   To clear vehicles after a high risk felony stop
►   To assist in SWAT operations
►   To act as a deterrent and back up in dangerous situations such as fights, riots and   
     disturbances
                                                            ►   To conduct public demonstrations

 

2006 Annual Report
Deputy Allen Moon, Canine Unit

         In 2006, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office procured a male, Sable German Shepherd from Europe.  The funding for the purchase of the canine was provided by the Raymond J. Timbrook “Ray of Hope” Fund.  The canine was named, SABER, which is an acronym. Saber stands for Scott, Authority, Bryon, Excellence, Ray.  The names in this acronym are to recognize Scott, Bryon and Raymond Timbrook.  Scott and Bryon Timbrook are the sons of deceased, Raymond Timbrook.  The generosity of the Ray of Hope Fund assisted the Sheriff’s Office in the development of this first class K9 Unit. 

        Saber’s handler is Deputy Alan Moon, a veteran Deputy Sheriff with the Road Patrol Division of the Sheriff’s Office.  In early 2006, Deputy Moon and Saber began basic training conducted by Master Trainers with the North American Police Work Dog Association.  Deputy Moon and Saber successfully completed their 680 hour certification training in late June, 2006.  Saber was certified as a police utility dog which incorporated the following disciplines: Building Searches, Article / Evidence Searches, Tracking, Area Searches, and Narcotics Detection. 
       
        The K9 Unit was equipped with state of the art equipment and a new K9 Patrol Vehicle.  On June 22nd, 2006, Deputy Moon and Saber commenced service to the people and community of Lake County, Ohio.  Since its inception, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit has had a positive impact on the community.  The Unit has also assisted the Sheriff’s Office in the identification of criminal activity and supported the Road Patrol Division in its efforts as it provides police services to the community.

         The following are the statistics for the K9 Unit for the year, 2006.  The K9 Unit was in service from June 22nd, through December 31st, 2006.  There were a total of 108 uses in 2006.
